Health and Safety Tips
Culture
Culture is not much like the culture in the U.S. but is very much like the culture in the countries surrounding it. Holidays like Christmas, Easter and New Years are all celebrated in Honduras but are often celebrated more religious than most people are in the U.S.
In Honduras a kiss on the check is a common greeting and is closer that the celebrity air kiss. Men who are close may greet like this and some men and women will greet like this as well. People how are not close will greet by starting with buenos dias (good day) or buenas tardes (good afternoon). People that are just meeting will say mucho gusto (nice to meet you) and my say good day as well.
Dishes in Honduras commonly contains some type of meat. Beef is preferred but chicken and pork are also common. In and near coastal areas seafood is eaten. Unlike many cultures, lamb is not common in traditional Honduran recipes. People in Honduras rely on spices and herbs to give their recipes unique tastes. As far as spiciness goes, most recipes are not very hot unlike most would think when imagining Mexican food. Tortillas are very commonly eaten in Honduras and tables without a stack of tortillas is often viewed as unacceptable. The tortillas are commonly made from scratch. Dough and ground corn are what they are made from and even the dough is made from scratch. The tortillas are then wrapped in a cloth to keep them warm on the table.
Spanish is the official language of Honduras and is spoken by all in the country. Many people speak English as well and it is the most common second language spoken in Honduras. In rural areas it is common to hear native languages but they are very uncommon in most areas.
Christmas is the biggest celebrations of the year in Honduras. They are filled with many religious meanings and are spent with those that are most important to one. People will often get together and read the bible which is followed by round of hugs and wishing each other Feliz Navidad
Easter celebrations center around Semana Santa (holy week). During this time people celebrate the last days of Jesus's life. It is another important religious holiday and is celebrated with prayers and family.
